Program Note

Bloom for Horn Trio was adapted from and composed around the solo violin piece: Bloom by Katherine Rawlings completed 2016. Bloom for solo violin was a little like a personal meditation in composition. The process Katherine used to write the piece was to play the violin and focus on the different tone colours and melodic themes and motifs that most made her feel a sense of calm and enjoyment. This included both auditory enjoyment – what was felt when listening to the sounds of the music when playing them on the violin; as well as physical enjoyment – what was felt when using variation in rhythm and tempo in the bowing arm, and through using variation in left hand positioning and other movements over the violin in the left hand. Simply put, Katherine focused on writing music that felt good to play. This violin solo was then used as the basis for developing the interweaving piano and horn parts.
